KARYA HAMIDI ABDUL HADI

Townhouse Gallery presents Indelible Markings, Hamidi Abdul Hadi’s first solo exhibition. A graduate of the prestigious UiTM, with a Masters Degree in Painting from the University of Wolverhampton, Hamidi Abdul Hadi is a Malaysian artist who has benefited from both a local art education and formal British art training. This can be seen in his approach to the canvas.

Working with a variety of mixed media including bitumen, enamel paint and various other organic materials, he drips and splashes the medium onto the canvas in a seemingly random manner. Gaining inspiration from the batik-making process, and observing the use of batik amongst the people of Malaysia, he successfully combines traditional sensibilities with his own unique “dripping” technique. His canvases exude an ethereal mood that is both abstract and poetic at the same time.

Despite his young age, Hamidi has won numerous art awards including the coveted Philip Morris ASEAN Biennale Art Award in 2000, and Bank Negara’s Kijang Award in 2004. Slated as a truly up-and-coming Malaysian abstract artist, Hamidi has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions abroad, namely in the United Kingdom and Singapore, and both the National Art Gallery and Petronas Gallery in Malaysia.

Indelible Markings will run at the Townhouse Gallery from August 17th to September 7th 2005. This exhibition will officially open with a cocktail reception at the Townhouse Gallery on August 17th 2005.
